The Regional Directorates are responsible for the institutional representation of the SERMIG in the region, to encourage the regular status of the migrant population, ensuring compliance with immigration regulations, promoting the development of citizen service initiatives and the promotion of rights and duties of the immigrant community.
The Dirección Nacional is headed by the director Luis Eduardo Thayer Correa, doctor in sociology and a specialist in migration, former academic at various universities in the country, and consultant on migration issues. The Dirección Nacional is responsible for the following direcciones: Operaciones; Gestión de Datos; Territorio e Inclusión; Administración y Finanzas; Jurídica; and the Subdirección Nacional.
The State of Chile has had to establish immigration policies since the beginning of its history as a Republic. The current Servicio Nacional de Migraciones was created in 2021, as a successor of the former Departamento de Extranjería, in order to ensure compliance with current immigration legislation in the country and lead the development of a National Migration Policy.
